I wish I had this as a gymnast.

4 surgeries.

Years of rehab.

And all of it started with weaknesses and limitations no one ever screened.

For years, I genuinely thought my body just "wasn't built" for gymnastics.

Over the course of my 16 year gymnastics career, I had surgeries on my:

•knee

•wrist

•both shoulders

I was constantly injured, frustrated, and always trying to "fix" symptoms without understanding the real problem.

Then I learned about a simple overhead mobility screen when I became a physical therapist.

It took 5 seconds.

My shoulder surgeries and rehab took 2 years.

That screen immediately showed I didn't even have the overhead mobility required for the skills I was training.

My body was constantly trying to find motion somewhere else - and eventually, my shoulders couldn't keep up.

It wasn't my body that was broken.

It was my foundation.

Once I started screening myself, strength training, rebuilding movement patterns, and improving mobility and control, everything changed.

A decade after stepping away from gymnastics, I returned in my 30s feeling stronger, more confident, and more resilient.

I feel better doing gymnastics in my 30s than I did as a teenager.

One of the biggest advantages I now have as a physical therapist and strength athlete is understanding how to actually assess my body. Instead of guessing, I screen myself for mobility limitations, weaknesses, stability issues, and movement quality.

I know where my weak links are before they turn into bigger problems.

And I want to give you that same superpower.

I use these same types of screens with the gymnasts I work with every day.

These tests can quickly identify:

• mobility restrictions

• strength deficits

• movement issues

• stability limitations

• hypermobility

And when addressed early, they can make a HUGE difference in performance and longevity in the sport.

1:1 care is still the gold standard.

But I know not everyone has access to a gymnastics-specific provider because of time, money, and location.

So I created the resource I wish I had growing up.

Not just screens that point out weaknesses...

But actionable steps you can use to build your own gymnast-specific prehab program.

Use the screens.

Retest throughout the year.

Build stronger foundations before problems build themselves.

Who this is for

Healthy gymnasts

who want to get ahead and understand their body better, reduce injury risk, and build stronger foundations for long-term performance.

Gymnasts returning after cleared from injury

Often times rehab stops at symptom reduction, doesn't assess the whole body, and lacks a deep understanding of the demands of gymnastics, leading to continued issues that may cause re-injury again.

Parents

who are tired of guessing and want actionable ways to help support their gymnast outside of practice.

Coaches

who want a better understanding of mobility, strength, and movement limitations that may affect skills and longevity.

Designed by a Gymnast & Doctor of Physical Therapy

I'm Dr. Sarah Barbosa, PT, DPT, physical therapist for gymnasts and strength athletes.

I was a former gymnast for 16 years with countless overuse injuries, but after quitting, I came back to the sport a decade later after screening myself and rebuilding my foundation the right way. I aimed not just to be pain-free, but to build a body that moved better and was capable of handling more. And now, gymnastics in my 30s feels better than it did in my teens.

Whatever your age, I want to help you feel the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

This guide is not meant to diagnose or treat a current injury or replace medical care.

However, it can be incredibly helpful for gymnasts returning after being cleared from injury. Often times traditional rehab reduces pain, but doesn’t fully assess the total body mobility, strength, stability, and movement demands needed for gymnastics — which can lead to recurring issues later on.

These screens are designed to help identify potential weak links and give you actionable areas to continue rebuilding your foundation.

This resource is best for gymnasts who can follow directions, understand basic body positions, and are motivated to learn more about their body and training. Younger gymnasts can still benefit, but parent or coach guidance can be helpful.

No. This guide is educational and is not meant to diagnose or treat injuries or replace medical care. It’s designed to help gymnasts better understand mobility, strength, stability, and movement limitations that may affect performance and injury risk.

Very little equipment is needed for the screens themselves. Most tests only require:

  • a wall

  • a stick/PVC pipe (helpful, but not required)

  • a bed, mat, or block to lay on

  • a small surface to jump from for landing tests

Some recommended exercises may use equipment like resistance bands, foam rollers, or dumbbells.

Absolutely. This can be a great tool for coaches looking to identify common mobility, strength, and movement limitations within their team.

Each screen includes short demo videos and guidance on what to look for, making it easier to follow along during assessments.

Forever. Once purchased, the PDF is yours to keep and revisit anytime throughout the season or year.

Yes. Every screen and recommended exercise includes a linked demo video so you can clearly see how to perform it correctly.

The toolkit includes printable checklists and tracking sheets so you can document your results after each screen and record action steps. There’s also a weekly planner to help take your action steps and organize them into a realistic routine you can actually follow consistently.
